Globular Clusters with Dark Matter Halos. Ii. Evolution in Tidal Field

چکیده
In this second paper in our series, we continue to test primordial scenarios of globular cluster formation which predict that globular clusters formed in the early universe in the potential of dark matter minihalos. In this paper we use high-resolution N-body simulations to model tidal stripping experienced by primordial darkmatter dominated globular clusters in the static gravitational potential of the host dwarf galaxy. We test both cuspy Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) and flat-core Burkert models of dark matter halos. Our primordial globular cluster with an NFW dark matter halo survives severe tidal stripping, and after 10 orbits is still dominated by dark matter in its outskirts. Our cluster with Burkert dark matter halo loses almost all its dark matter to tidal stripping, and starts losing stars at the end of our simulations. The results of this paper reinforce our conclusion in Paper I that current observations of globular clusters are consistent with the primordial picture of globular cluster formation. Globular Clusters with Dark Matter Halos. I. Initial Relaxation
In a series of two papers, we test the primordial scenario of globular cluster formation using results of highresolutions N-body simulations. In this first paper we study the initial relaxation of a stellar core inside a live dark matter minihalo in the early universe. Our dark-matter dominated globular clusters show features which are usually attributed to the action of the tidal field of the ...
متن کاملConstraints on the global mass to light ratios and extent of dark matter halos in globular clusters and dwarf spheroidals
The detection of stars in the process of being tidally removed from globular clusters and dwarf spheroidals in the Galaxy’s halo provides a strong constraint on their mass to light ratios and on the extent of their possible dark matter halos. If a significant dark matter component existed either within or beyond the observed stellar distribution, then stars would not be removed. We use numerica...
متن کاملUncovering CDM halo substructure with tidal streams
Models for the formation and growth of structure in a cold dark matter dominated universe predict that galaxy halos should contain significant substructure. Studies of the Milky Way, however, have yet to identify the expected few hundred sub-halos with masses greater than about 10 M⊙. Here we propose a test for the presence of sub-halos in the halos of galaxies. We show that the structure of th...
متن کاملHalo Kinematics
I summarize recent observations of the kinematics of hot tracers in elliptical galaxy halos (globular clusters, planetary nebulae, and integrated stellar light), and what these tell us about the dynamics, dark matter content, and formation of ellipticals. A generic result is the ubiquity of dark matter halos in ellipticals. Studies of globular clusters and planetary nebulae are now finding oute...
متن کاملEvidence for Tidal Stripping of Dark Matter Halos in Massive Cluster-lenses
In this letter, we present the results of our study of galaxy-galaxy lensing in massive cluster-lenses spanning z = 0.17 to 0.58, utilizing high-quality archival Hubble Space Telescope (HST ) data. Local anisotropies in the shear maps are assumed to arise from dark matter substructure within these clusters. Associating the substructure with bright early-type cluster galaxies, we quantify the pr...
